Newsflash: Climate change is not caused by humans. It’s caused by capitalism. The dynamic of capitalism requires growth in production every year, at least 2 or 3%. It’s capitalism that drives the fossil fuels industry, the corporate farming industry, the auto industry, the steel industry, the coal industry and all the industries which spew CO2 into the air at unsustainable levels and dump industrial waste poisoning our oceans, lakes, and streams.
Can climate collapse be stopped without ending capitalism? Personally, I doubt it. Bringing bags to the market and recycling are worthy endeavors, but most people realize they’re not nearly enough. The green new deal is certainly a step in the right direction, but it looks to me that capitalism is in the throes of fundamental collapse and if we’re not careful it will take the climate with it.
The antidote to capitalism is socialism, of course, a system which, unlike capitalism, can engage in long term planning. So the first step is to vote and campaign for the socialists running for office at all levels.
But fortunately or unfortunately, there is no short-cut to socialism shy of organizing the working class internationally in electoral campaigns, unions, schools, and communities. To succeed in this effort, we will need to take on racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and all the other isms and phobias that divide us. I know this sounds like a lot of work, because it is. But what choice do we have?
In few days I’ll write more about what I think socialism is. Hint: it’s about which class is in leadership of society.
