After the Election

droneLast week I slogged into the fray to argue with Bernie or Bust/Jill Stein folks about why they should vote the Democratic ticket. I’m not going to reiterate the argument. Not surprisingly, I took a lot of shit from the ex-Bernie new-Greens. It didn’t bother me, I was ready for it. Probably lost about 30 of my 5000 friends. Boo-hoo.

This week I want to talk about how we rebuild the unity we’re going to need going forward, no matter what happens.  We need to unite around a series of demands no matter who is elected. Here would be my list:

  1. No escalation in the middle east, stop the drones, stop the bombing.
  2. Move aggressively toward ending mass incarceration by freeing all nonviolent drug offenders immediately. Federal investigation of all police killings of unarmed victims.
  3. Invest in Black and Latin communities
  4. Invest in alternative energy sources as least as much as oil subsidies.

It doesn’t matter so much what the demands are, just that they foster unity of the progressive movement. Whoever wins, we need to put the election behind us and move to the next phase of our movement. The post-election blame game will tempt some folks, but let’s skip it. Let’s focus on what we agree on, not where we disagree. If Clinton wins, my guess is the middle east will be our next battleground, demanding no escalation. If Trump wins, the defense of the Latino and Black communities will be the highest priority.
