My earliest school memory: I was at nursery school, 5 years old It was only October, but I had convinced my mother to let me wear my older sister’s black leather ski boots with stubby toes. At the end of outside time, I climbed a mound of dirt. crossed my arms, and surveyed the whole yard, my domain. “I’m going to be a robber!” I said aloud to no one.

Only recently did I recall what may have inspired this vision: Basil Rathbone’s retelling of the Robin Hood story on a 78 recording that I listened to over and over. I’m convinced that this experience was a primary influence on my life as a social justice warrior.

According to Wikipedia, “In 1953, during the  McCarty era, a Republican member of the Indiana Textbook Commission called for a ban of Robin Hood from all Indiana school books for its alleged communist connotations.” Indeed!
